Supported by funding from the Duke Department of Medicine’s Eugene A. Stead Student Research Scholarship, fourth year medical student and internal medicine resident hopeful Laura Noteware is working to change that.

Kathleen Cooney, MD, chair of the Duke Department of Medicine, is the senior author of the study appearing online on Nov. 29 in the journal JCO Precision Oncology.

Arif Kamal, MD, HS’12, MHS’15, is highlighted as an alumni of the Duke University School of Medicine for his engagement and role with the American Cancer Society

For decades, medical cancer treatment has generally meant chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, alone or in combination. But things are changing rapidly. Today, new approaches such as immunotherapies and targeted therapies are becoming available, with many more in research and development. In many cases, the new treatments are more effective, with fewer side effects.

Three faculty members from the Department of Medicine have been awarded distinguished professorships, the highest honor the university can bestow upon a member of the faculty. The appointments are effective on July 1, 2022.
