Allergen immunotherapy or "allergy shots" may sometimes be ordered by the allergist. The allergen immunotherapy formulas are custom mixed in our laboratory for each patient, depending upon what someone may be allergic to.
These mixtures may be composed of extracts from the various pollens of grasses, weeds, and trees. Other mixtures may include extracts prepared from dust mites, molds, or additional extracts.
New allergen immunotherapy is always started using very weak or dilute mixtures and gradually increased in strength over a number of weeks.
Once a patient reaches their maintenance strength, the allergy shots are continued for a number of months. During follow-up visits the allergist will monitor the effectiveness of the allergen immunotherapy.
