Dr. Deepshikha Ashana: Research at the Intersection of Science and Advocacy

Born in a small town in India to physician parents, Deepshikha Ashana, MD, MBA, MS, naturally developed a love for medicine as a child. She also watched her mother — an obstetrician — walk a professional path that was fraught with gender-based discrimination; an experience that instilled in her the core personal value of equity.    

Leadership in Action: Duke’s Influential Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Enters a New Era

Pulmonary rehabilitation has come a long way as a treatment modality for patients with chronic lung diseases. Duke’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program—one of the oldest, largest, and most influential in the country—has been at the forefront of this progress since its inception in 1985 by longtime Duke Pulmonary Rehabilitation Medical Director Dr. Neil R. MacIntyre, who has played a pioneering role in the development of pulmonary rehabilitation as a one of the most effective treatments for patients with chronic lung diseases.

In October 2023, Megan E.B. Clowse, MD, MPH, an internationally recognized expert in the field of rheumatology and immunology, stepped into her new role in the Duke University Department of Medicine as the division chief of Rheumatology and Immunology. She plans to continue the expansion and forward trajectory of the division.

Nystrom, Vose Receive Physician-Scientist Strong Start Awards

Two Department of Medicine faculty members, Sara Nystrom, MD, medical instructor in the division of Nephrology, and Aaron Vose, MD, medical instructor in the division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, have been selected to receive 2024 Physician-Scientist “Strong Start” awards.
