Duke Basic Science Multidisciplinary Lab Meeting

These meetings are held every Monday from 9-10 p.m. in the 3rd floor conference room in MSRB2 and on Zoom. Faculty and fellows in the Division of Nephrology as well as other researchers from around Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and NCCU campuses attend. These meetings provide a forum for nephrology faculty, fellows and others engaged in nephrology-related basic science research.

Multi-Disciplinary Transplantation Conference

A “working” conference held weekly at noon on Mondays Hanes House room 302 from 2:30-5pm. This conference reviews all patients with kidney and combined kidney and pancreas transplants who have been seen within the week in the inpatient or outpatient setting at Duke University Medical Center. All faculty, fellows, residents and students who have had contact with these patients are encouraged to attend. Staff from the typing lab, the transplant coordinators, transplant social worker, surgical senior staff and housestaff attend this conference as well.

Kidney Transplant Quarterly Retreat

Quality improvement forum to discuss the kidney transplant program at Duke. Held in room 2W96 in the Duke DMP on the first Monday of each quarter from 5-7pm.

Board Review

Board review meets every week with our PD Matthew Sparks, MD. These sessions will consist of going through nephrology board-style questions and explaining correct and incorrect answer choices.

Duke Transplant Academia Meeting

These meetings are held on the second Tuesdays of every month) in the Hospital Addition for Surgery (HAFS) 7th floor conference room. Faculty and fellows from the Division of Nephrology and Department of Surgery attend. This meeting is a grand rounds discussion of patients undergoing transplant of all solid organs including pancreas, kidney, heart, lung, liver and small bowel.

Nephrology Core Curriculum for Fellows

The Nephrology Core Curriculum for Fellows is a didactic conference held every Wednesdays at noon. Attendance by all first year fellows is mandatory and lunch is provided. Attendance for upper level fellows is strongly encouraged. Each session is led by a faculty member, either from the Division of Nephrology or a related discipline, who has a particular expertise or interest in the topic area. Topics covered include: fluids and electrolytes, calcium and phosphorus metabolism, acid-base physiology, hypertension, glomerular disease, chronic dialysis, aspects of transplantation, end of life, ethics. The spread of topics is taken from the ABIM blueprint and the ACGME program requirements in nephrology.

Duke Kidney Transplant Morbidity and Mortality Conference

The Duke Kidney Transplant Morbidity and Mortality Conference is held on the third Wednesday of each month in Hanes House room 302. Faculty and fellows from the Division of Nephrology and Department of Surgery both attend this conference. The purpose of this conference is to improve patient care of patients undergoing kidney transplants at Duke Hospital.

Wolf Conference 

This is a bimonthly conference where fellows present cases and go over differential diagnoses with our division chief, Dr Myles Wolf. 

Duke Glomerulonephritis (GN) Club and Outpatient Conference

The Duke Glomerulonephritis (GN) Club or outpatient conference meets on the 2nd Wed of each months from 4-5pm on Zoom. The purpose it to discuss patients with rare glomerular diseases on a longitudinal basis. The conference will also discuss systems issues and invite speakers from Rheumatology, Pathology and other disciplines. The outpatient conference covers issues related to outpatient care of patients. 

Journal Club

Journal Club is held each week on Thursdays at 8:30 to 9 am on Zoom.
 
Faculty members and fellows are assigned on a rotating basis to present clinical or basic science literature relevant to cardiovascular disease, nephrology and transplantation. To ensure that these areas are covered, two presenters are scheduled each week and assigned to review either basic science journals (Nature, Science, Cell, JCI, AJP, PNAS, or the Journal of Immunology) or clinical journals (NEJM, Kidney International, Transplantation, JASN, AJKD, Hypertension, and The Lancet).

Divisional Research in Progress Conference

The Divisional Research in Progress conference is held once each month on Friday during Grand Rounds. A faculty member or fellow leads the conference, presenting his or her basic science or clinical research in progress. This provides a forum for the presenting faculty member or fellow to present and receive feedback on this research.

Inter-Disciplinary VA Dialysis Conference

This is another “working” conference, held weekly on Thursdays in the Durham VA Medical Center Dialysis Unit from 10-10:30 a.m. Participants will discuss current issues pertaining to patients that the inpatient consulting service is following. Clinic patients who were seen during the preceding week who are nearing the need for chronic dialysis may be presented so that issues pertaining to their disposition can be addressed.

Participants also discuss issues related to impending home dialysis patients. VA faculty, fellow, residents and students are encouraged to attend. Staff from the dialysis unit, social work service and dietary service will also attend.

Nephropathology Working Rounds

Held on Zoom on the 4th Wed of each month from 4-5 pm. This is a monthly working rounds (in addition to the monthly pathology lectures on Friday morning) style conference held by Drs. Singh, Barisoni, Howell, and Buckely. Cases will be discussed as they are being prepared. Focus will be on going through basic steps of tissue processing, interpretation, and real world dilemmas that come up with cases.

Nephrology Grand Rounds

Nephrology Grand Rounds are the primary teaching conference of the Division of Nephrology. They are held every Friday from 9-10 a.m. in Room 2001 (an hybrid in Zoom) Duke University Hospital. Click here for the Friday Morning Conference Schedule. 

Both clinical and basic science topics pertinent to nephrology are presented at this conference. Each fellow, guided by a faculty-mentor, will present once a year. Speakers from outside the Division of Nephrology and Duke University will also be incorporated into the conference schedule. Pathology Conference and Clinical Case Conference (as described below) occur in this time slot approximately once every six weeks.

Clinical Case Conference

Clinical case conferences are sometimes held on Fridays during Nephrology Grand Rounds. Cases are chosen for presentation from the kidney transplant, acute DMP service, DCT, floor service, and the Durham VA Medical Center Nephrology services. The fellow on the clinical service presents cases with the guidance of the rounding attending. The presenting fellow then leads a discussion of pathophysiology and treatment options for the case presented. three to four cases are reviewed each conference.
