As the 2024-2025 academic year gets underway and a new cohort of chief residents comes onboard, Department of Medicine (DOM) clinicians and faculty members may notice an extra fresh face among the team members as the Duke Internal Medicine Residency programs expands its number of chief residents from four to five.  

Julius M. Wilder, MD, PhD, associate professor in the division of Gastroenterology and chair of the Department of Medicine Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism (DEIAR) Committee, has been named as the next vice chair of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion effective July 1.

Drs. James Abbruzzese, Pamela Douglas, Neil MacIntyre, and Diana McNeill have received the 2024 Department of Medicine Career Achievement Award in recognition of the extraordinary impact that their careers have had in one of the department’s three core missions: education, research, and clinical medicine. 

Drs. Lisa Criscione-Schreiber, Aimee Zaas, and Mitch Heflin have been selected as the inaugural winners of the Department of Medicine (DOM) Education Achievement Award in recognition for their exceptional dedication to the art and practice of teaching.

The Department of Medicine’s 2024 Resident Research Day, held Friday, May 10, featured presentations from this year’s Califf Resident Research Award winners: Drs. Isabelle Byers, PGY-2, Noah Hellermann, PGY-2, and Jay Lusk, PGY-1.

Dr. Stefanie Sarantopoulos grew up in the Connecticut textile mill town of Danielson, where her Greek immigrant grandparents settled. When she was 12, her parents moved the family across the country to open a restaurant in rural Arizona—the Olympic Pizzarama—where Dr. Sarantopoulos discovered how much she loved people—and their stories.

The Department of Medicine’s partnership with the Durham VA Health Care System, the work our faculty and staff do there to care for patients, and the biomedical research they conduct shed important light on health care issues relevant to veterans. This year’s annual Veterans Day Medicine Grand Rounds, The Veterans Experience, addresses some of these critical topics.  

For eight weeks every summer, four competitively selected, eagerly excited and ambitious undergraduate juniors and seniors get the chance to come to Duke to participate in the REACH Equity Summer Undergraduate Research Program (RESURP).
