Sullenger, Becker receive U54 grant to study thrombosis and hemostasis
Bruce Sullenger and Richard Becker, MD, MEd,, professor of medicine (Cardiology), have been awarded a U54 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study thrombosis and hemostasis employing an oligonucleotide-based platform.
Tom Ortel, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (Hemtaology) has one of the projects in this U54.

Hematology training program receives renewed K12 funding
Marilyn Telen, MD, Wellcome Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Hematology, has learned that a joint Duke-UNC faculty training program, Clinical Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Research Career Development Program, has received renewed funding from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

William Kane, associate professor of medicine, has died
Dean Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, wrote to the faculty of the School of Medicine today to share the news that William H. Kane, MD, PhD, passed away on April 30 after a long battle with cancer.
Dr. Kane was an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology with a secondary appointment in Pathology.

Reception to honor Weinberg for Middleton Award 6/20/2011
A event to honor J. Brice Weinberg, MD, recipient of the prestigious Williams S. Middleton Award for outstanding achievement in biomedical or behavioral research (read previous post), will be held Mon., June 20, 2011 in the VA Medical Center Bldg. 16, Room 58.
Dr. Weinberg will make a presentation from 10:30am – 11am, followed by a reception until 12:30pm.
Hematology T-32 training grant renewed for years 36-40
Marilyn Telen, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Hematology, recently learned that the NIH had renewed Duke's T-32 grant, for which she is program director.
That grant supports both Internal Medicine Hematology and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology research fellows (total of six per year) working in hematology, bone marrow transplant, and transfusion medicine, as well as one PhD post-doctoral trainee in hemoglobinopathies research.
This renewal is for years 36-40 of the grant, starting July 1, 2011.
Weinberg to receive VA's prestigious Middleton Award
J. Brice Weinberg, MD, professor of medicine (Hematology) and staff physician in hematology-oncology at the Durham VA Medical Center, will be awarded the prestigious William S. Middleton Award by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in a Washington ceremony on May 4, 2011.

Marilyn Telen, MD, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Hematology, is in Russia September through November on a Fulbright fellowship.
