Grand Rounds 10/4/13: Therapeutic Apheresis

7/23/13: Thrombosis and Hemostasis Disorders Consortium guest lecture

Pete Lollar, MD, professor of pediatrics at Emory University and Director of Hemostasis Research, will give a lecture on Tue., July 23 from 9-10 a.m. in Duke North, Room 2003. Dr. Lollar will present "The Immune Response to Factor VIII - Including a Trip to the Biotechnology Sector." Lollar will also attend a small group discussion from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. in MSRB II, Room 3090. Lunch will be provided and space is limited.

4/2/13: Thrombosis and Hemostasis Disorders Consortium lecture

The Thrombosis and Hemostasis Disorders Consortium will host Evan Sadler, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (Hematology) and Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University in St. Louis, on Tuesday, April 2 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in Duke North, Room 2003. Dr. Sadler will discuss von Willebrand Factor, ADAMTS13 and Thrombotic Microangiopathy. All are welcome to attend.

Marilyn Telen stepping down as Chief of Hematology; Tom Ortel to step up

Mary Klotman, MD, chair of the department, announced today that after more than 17 years as the founding Chief of the Division of Hematology, Marilyn Telen, MD, has elected to step down from her role as division chief. "I am very grateful to Marilyn for the many years of dedication she gave the Division," Dr. Klotman said in a message to faculty, fellows, residents and staff.

Sullenger, Becker receive U54 grant to study thrombosis and hemostasis

Bruce Sullenger and Richard Becker, MD, MEd,, professor of medicine (Cardiology), have been awarded a U54 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to study thrombosis and hemostasis employing an oligonucleotide-based platform. Tom Ortel, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (Hemtaology) has one of the projects in this U54. "Congratulations," Mary Klotman, MD, department chair, wrote to the group.

Hematology training program receives renewed K12 funding

Marilyn Telen, MD, Wellcome Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of Hematology, has learned that a joint Duke-UNC faculty training program, Clinical Hematology and Transfusion Medicine Research Career Development Program, has received renewed funding from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. William Kane, associate professor of medicine, has died

Dean Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, wrote to the faculty of the School of Medicine today to share the news that William H. Kane, MD, PhD, passed away on April 30 after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Kane was an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology with a secondary appointment in Pathology.
