Rubin receives ambulatory teaching award

Dr. Sharon Rubin, assistant professor of medicine in Duke GIM, received the 2016 Ambulatory Teaching Award at Duke Medicine Grand Rounds on June 10. The Internal Medicine House Staff presents this award to a faculty member who best exemplifies commitment and excellence to teaching in ambulatory medicine.

 

Perlman featured on front page of The Herald Sun

Does this picture look familiar? You may have seen Dr. Adam Perlman on the front page of The Herald Sun recently for an article entitled, “Doctor: Tackle pain from different angles”.

In the article, executive director of Duke Integrative Medicine and faculty member in general internal medicine, Adam Perlman, MD, talks about the single shot approach to pain management may not be the best way to go.

Kessler Named VA’s Acting Emergency Medicine Chief

Chad Kessler, MD, Deputy Durham VAMC Chief of Staff, recently received the national role of VA’s Acting Director of Emergency Medicine.

As director, Kessler will oversee the 119 emergency departments in VA medical centers across the United States while continuing in his Durham post. Kessler got his start in emergency care through a program sponsored by the VA at the Jesse Brown VAMC in Chicago allowing him to do a combined residency in emergency and internal medicine.

As the highlight of the academic year for many of us, SGIM’s annual meeting took place May 11-14 in the beautiful Hollywood, Florida. I attended and presented at the SGIM annual meeting this year and it was great as always. Here are my 5 reasons I’m glad I attended the meeting:

GIM Faculty Spotlight: Nilesh Patel, MD, MS

Meet Nilesh Patel, MD, MS, a DUH hospitalist since finishing his residency in 2013 and chief residency just last year. Get to know Dr. Patel through our interview below. 

How long have you been at Duke?

I am starting in my sixth year at Duke. I did both my residency and Chief Residency here at Duke, and liked it so much that I’ve stuck around since then (or rather, GIM and hospital medicine let me stay).

This year’s Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM) conference provided a great opportunity for Duke trainees and faculty to share their work and steep in the activities of the larger general internal medicine community. Conference offerings focused on the major theme of “Generalists engaged in Population Health: Improving Outcomes and Equity through Research, Education and Patient Care”.
