Payne to Head Informatics Research Seminar on August 20

Phillip PaynePhilip R. O. Payne, PhD, FACMI, will deliver the lecture, "Biomedical Informatics: A Vision for the Next 10 Years of Innovation" for the next Informatics Research Seminar from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20, in Hock Auditorium of Hock Plaza. The lecture can also be streamed live from this address.   

PCORI Announces New Funding Opportunities

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is offering up to $76 million in support for patient-centered comparative effectiveness research proposals. Letters of Intent are due by Friday, September 5. In addition, on August 18, PCORI will issue its third call for proposals for large pragmatic clinical trials or large-scale observational studies. Up to $10 million per project will be available under this PFA.

Faculty Spotlight: John J. Paat, MD

Paat recently returned to the Division after a stint at the Mayo Clinic. In this article he talks about working as the Medical Director of the Private Diagnostic Clinics, the concierge model of healthcare, and how Duke has changed since the 1990s. Duke CTSA KL2 Accepting Applications

CTSAThe Duke CTSA research career development award program (Duke CTSA KL2) is now accepting applications. This program will provide skilled and personalized mentoring, a tailored scientific and career development curriculum, and the chance to conduct clinical or translational research. Three Scholars will be awarded 75% protected effort for 3 years, $20,000/year for research expenses, and $2,500/year for travel to professional meetings. Funding will start July 2015.

Duke AHEAD Calling for Poster Abstracts

The Duke Academy for Health Professions Education and Academic Development (Duke AHEAD) is calling for poster abstracts for its first Education Celebration. This celebration, which will be held November 13-14, will spotlight health-professions educators as well as their innovations and achievements. Abstracts are due Monday, August 11 and should advance innovation in education excellence.

Division Faculty, Residents Meet with Congressional Representatives

ACLT group photoEarlier this spring, Drs. Daniella Zipkin MD, and Alex Cho, MD, MBA, traveled with four internal medicine residents to Washington D.C., to meet with Congressional representatives and learn about legislative advocacy. The Department of Medicine’s Elizabeth McCamic wrote a feature-length story on the subject, which was published on the Department of Medicine’s blog.

Faculty Spotlight: Ryanne Wu, MD

How long have you been at Duke? How long have you been at the Division? Those are two different questions for me. I first came to Duke as an undergraduate more years ago than I like to admit. I then left for medical school and residency training.

NIDCD Funding Research on Human Communication Disorders

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) has issued a funding opportunity announcement for R01 and R21 grants to support effectiveness, outcomes and health services research in hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language. Up to $500,000 per year for a maximum of five years is available. Applications are due by October 2014. Read the full announcement.
