Gierisch Awarded IIR Grant for Smoking Cessation RCT
Jennifer Gierisch, PhD, was just awarded a VA HSR&D investigator-initiated research (IIR) grant, "Adjunctive Mood Management for Telephone-Based Smoking Cessation in Primary Care." This four-year randomized controlled trial will assess the combined potency of co-delivered behavioral mood management and the reach of proactive telephone-delivered interventions. PhRMA Foundation Offering 2015 Grants and Fellowships
The PhRMA Foundation is offering 2015 grants and fellowships in clinical pharmacology, health outcomes, and translational medicine and therapeutics. Available awards include the $120,000 Faculty Development Award in Clinical Pharmacology, research starter grants in health outcomes and translational medicine and therapeutics, and doctoral fellowship awards. Applications are due by February 1, 2015.
Peyser Authors Articles and Presents on Academic Education
Congratulations to Bruce Peyser, MD, who co-authored two recent academic articles and contributed to a panel on improving academic education for internal medicine. Dr. Peyser was the lead author for “Enlisting new teachers in clinical environments (ENTICE): Novel ways to engage clinicians,” published in the most recent issue of Advances in Medical Education and Practice.

Clinical Science Day is November 8
This year’s Clinical Science Day will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 8. This CME-accredited program brings together faculty staff trainees and students to celebrate clinical science research and encourage collaboration. This Clinical Science day will feature five School of Medicine faculty speakers, including Division Chief Ebony Boulware, MD.

Mandel Center Offering Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships
The Mandel Center for Hypertension and Atherosclerosis at Duke is requesting proposals to support a research fellow to research the causes and treatment of hypertension, atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases. The Center will award one 1-year $45,000 fellowship grant; applications are due by December 1. Each applicant must have an identified Mentor who is a member of the Duke Cardiovascular Research Center at the time the application is reviewed.
Holland Authors JAMA Article
Thomas L. Holland, MD, was the lead author of an article published in the latest issue of JAMA. “Clinical management of Staphlococcus aureus bacteremia” reviewed the medical literature to determine the optimal treatments for S. aureus bacteremia. Congratulations, Dr. Holland! Read the article here.
Tulsky Receives $1.7 Million PCORI Grant
Congratulations are once again in order for Dr. Tulsky, who was just awarded a $1.7 million, three-year grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). This grant will build upon an existing computer program called SCOPE that allows oncologists to record conversations with patients and receive feedback on how well they did.
Lloyd Charitable Trust Offering Melanoma Research Grants
The Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust is accepting application for melanoma research projects in melanoma research in three categories Career, Basic Science, and Translational Research. Awards tend to be in the range of $100K - $125K per year; applications are due by December 10. Read more.
