Marion Broome named next dean of Duke University School of Nursing

Victor J. Dzau, MD, Chancellor for Health Affairs, announced to Duke Medicine Faculty and Staff today that Marion E. Broome, PhD, FAAN, has been named the next dean of the Duke University School of Nursing and vice chancellor of nursing affairs at Duke University. In addition, Dr. Broome will assume the newly created position of associate vice president for academic affairs for nursing for Duke University Health System.

Schwartz Center Rounds: “Dying in Shackles” on May 14

The next Schwartz Center Rounds, “Dying in Shackles: Caring for Prisoners at the End of Life,” will be held Wednesday, May 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in Duke North 2002. All are invited to attend.

Schwartz Center Rounds is a monthly interdisciplinary conference that offers clinicians an opportunity to openly and honestly discuss social and emotional issues that arise in caring for patients. Panelists this month include Jon Baumgardner, RN, Lydia Mis, PharmD, BCOP, and Benjamin Peterson, MD.

Zipkin Promoted to Associate Professor

ZipkinDaniella A. Zipkin, MD has been promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine! Daniella is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and curriculum development. She leads major educational initiatives at Duke, including the Evidence Based Medicine Curriculum for the Internal Medicine Residency as well as the weekly Academic Half-Day program.

Bosworth Receives Adherence Evaluation Award

Dr.Hayden Bosworth Hayden Bosworth, PhD, has received a PhRMA Foundation Award. This award will help fund his research project to implement a medication adherence program that combines interactive technology and telephonic self-management in patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Congratulations, Dr. Bosworth!

 

Training Grants Positions Open for Heart and Vascular Diseases

There are currently several postdoctoral training grant positions open for the T32 “Multidisciplinary Heart and Vascular Diseases.” All eligible faculty members are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must not have prior postdoctoral NIH support. Women and minority applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

If you have a candidate for consideration, please send an application by May 30, 2014, with a start date for a successful applicant anytime between now and March 30, 2015.

Tulsky Receives Funding for Decision-Making Research

james.tulsky-mdDr. James Tulsky, MD, received funding for his pilot/exploratory project, “Triadic Expectations:  Decision-Making in Advanced Cancer.” This project will explore the entire decision-making triad of patient, oncologist, and caregiver and examine how these individuals influence each others’ decision-making.
