DOC receives funding for acute illness treatment
The Duke Outpatient Clinic (DOC) has been selected by the Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI) for funding of $91,644 to “Develop On-Site Acute Illness Treatment Capacity in Hospital-Based Primary Care,” a project with leadership by Lynn Bowlby, MD.

A big congratulations are in order for the two faculty members who received awards at the recent North Carolina chapter meeting of the American College of Physicians.
Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, a Duke Primary Care physician, was awarded the 2016 Award for Volunteerism and Community Service for the founding and directing the Community Health Coalition in Durham NC.

“The Year of the Hospitalist” – Setji reports on recent SHM Conference
The Society of Hospital Medicine held their annual conference this week in San Diego, California. Williams writes editorial for Annals of Int Medicine

The March 1st issue of Annals of Internal Medicine includes an editorial by John W. Williams Jr., MD, MHSc, a Duke GIM clinician-researcher and educator, together with Gary Maslow, MD, MPH, also a Duke faculty member (Pediatrics and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences). The commentary is titled “Seize the Day to Implement Depression Guidelines.”
Study: Mapping family history can lead more at-risk patients to timely screening
A Duke study led by Lori Orlando, MD, looks at how more deliberate efforts to map a patient’s family tree could identify additional risks and drive patients to more timely screenings.

Welcome new GIM faculty
This month the Division of General Internal Medicine is pleased to announce additions of three new faculty members.Two are biostatisticians and one joins the ambulatory medicine service at the Durham VA Medical Center.
Brad Hammill, DrPH, MS
Dr. Hammill, a longtime collaborator with our researchers, joins our DCRI faculty as a Senior Biostatistician. His primary focus in research covers areas of health policy, health services research, outcomes, and pharmacoepidemiology.
Faculty Spotlight: Virginia Wang, PhD
Last October 2015 we wrote about Dr. Virginia Wang’s new appointment to the editorial board of Health Care Management Review. We thought our readers would be interested to read more about her career as a health services researcher as well as her work-life experiences.
