Southern SGIM 2021 Recap
February 24th and 25th gave SGIM members a first: a fully virtual Southern Region Conference. Over the course of a day and a half, we got to hear an array of presentations and speeches from our colleagues. Participants joined from as far away as Texas and Kentucky, a chance for new connections with our near and far neighbors.

Lawrence And Mumm, MD - Palliative Care
Dr. Mumm completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in 2016, followed by a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, also at Duke, in 2017. He was recruited to the Duke Division of General Internal Medicine as a Medical Instructor in Palliative Care in July, 2017.

The DOC dismantles inequities starting with monthly exercises
The Duke Outpatient Clinic (DOC) developed an Equity Task Force during the summer of 2020 in an effort to dismantle racial inequity at the DOC and beyond. Their mission is to be anti-racist in patient care, clinical processes, administrative processes, and to demonstrate shared responsibility among all racial groups in addressing inequity.
Duke alum helps address the root causes of poor health in the region
There is a significant connection between housing stability and food access. Families experiencing financial hardship may have little money left for food after paying their rent or mortgage, or they may live in disinvested neighborhoods where access to healthy, affordable food is less likely. The current economic crisis caused by the pandemic has led to devastating consequences for those who were already struggling.
