Virginia Wang, PhD, Clarissa Diamantidis, MD, et al. authored a recent research article in BMC Nephrology entitled, Minding the gap and overlap: a literature review of fragmentation of primary care for chronic dialysis patients. The paper looks at the collaboration and communication of primary care physicians (PCPs) and nephrologists in patients with end-stage renal disease. 

Clinician researcher, Kevin Shah, MD, isn't new to Duke GIM, but he did recently transition to a regular rank faculty member in the division. Learn more about him in our interview!

Kevin Schulman, MD, MBA, Professor of Medicine (GIM), co-authored with Duke cardiologist Daniel B. Mark, MD, MPH, an editorial  in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The publication is entitled PCSK9 Inhibitors and the Choice Between Innovation, Efficiency, and Affordability and was published August 22. 

Joeph Lunyera contributed a guest commentary in the most recent issue of Kidney International, along with colleague, Dr. Stephen Smith.

The Advance Care Planning (ACP) initiative at the DOC is off to a great start.  Patients have already started coming to ACP dedicated appointments at the DOC to meet with our new patient navigators to get started on “Care Planning,” the patient-centered process of speaking with loved ones and the medical team about the care a patient would like to receive if unable to speak for him/herself.  

Dr. Larry Greenblatt, GIM Professor of Medicine and leader of the Duke Opioid Safety Task Force, was recently featured in an article in Modern Healthcare entitled, "Helping physicians be smarter opioid prescribers".

Jenny Van Kirk, MD, finished up her internal medicine residency at Duke and joined the DGIM faculty this July as Medical Instructor in Hospital Medicine. Here's what we learned on a personal note:

GIM Assistant Professor of Medicine, Clarissa Diamantidis, MD, presented "Can Telehealth Reduce Disparities in Diabetic Kidney Disease?" at the Duke Endocrinology Grand Rounds on Friday, July 28.

David Simel, MD, co-authored a Rational Clinical Examination Systematic Review in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The publication is entitled "Does This Child Have Pneumonia?" and was published August 1.
