Beyond DNA: Probing big data to demystify disease

As a young researcher, Svati Shah expected that genomic studies would reveal vital insights into the roots of disease. When they did not, the cardiologist widened her net to compare many more molecular components at once. The result is a growing understanding of the cellular profile of disease more specific than tales told by static DNA. 

Department of Medicine celebrates the “Greenfield Era” of Medicine

Joseph Greenfield, MD, chair of the Duke Department of Medicine from 1983 to 1995, is known by many at Duke for the clinical innovations he initiated here. To celebrate Dr. Greenfield and his contributions to the Department and Duke Health, the Department of Medicine will hold a special Medicine Grand Rounds on Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Trent Semans Center for Health Education.

Hernandez named vice dean for clinical research

Dean Mary Klotman, MD, announced that Adrian Hernandez, MD, professor of medicine (Cardiology), will serve as the new vice dean for clinical research for the Duke University School of Medicine.

Cheryl Woodard, offering encouragement and a helping hand in the workplace

To her colleagues, Duke Cardiovascular Research Center staff assistant Cheryl Woodard embodies what it means to be a part of a team. If a task needs to be done quickly and efficiently, Woodard gets it done. If you need a friend, she is there to listen. Through her three decades at Duke, she has shown to herself and others that no goal is unachievable.

Rymer receives The Mario Family Foundation Award

Jennifer Rymer, MD, MBA, cardiovascular disease fellow, will receive The Mario Family Foundation Award, which supports junior investigators in training in the Department of Medicine to make the transition to become independent scientists and planning for their first extra-mural funding.
