The Fellows Career Preparation Retreat Series covers important career navigation skills common to physicians in all internal medicine subspecialties. In-person and online sessions also provide opportunities for fellows across the Duke Department of Medicine to network with eachother, and with faculty members throughout each academic year.Each session includes ample time for fellows to have their questions answered and engage in conversations about the topics at hand.
The core curriculum each year includes the following retreats:
Negotiating Your First Contract with Amy Porter-Tacoronte, MBA, Vice Chair for Administration and Finance. Through this retreat fellows learn an approach to signing their first post-training employment contract. This session addresses ways to identify the elements that each individual considers important in their first job, and how to achieve a successful agreement.

Financial Planning with Venu Reddy, MD. Dr. Reddy shares his broad and deep knowledge of financial planning for physicians, from a doctor’s point of view. This is a two-part series.
-First session to be via Zoom on Tuesday, February 6th from 12:00-1:00pm (link will be emailed out)

Choosing a Career Path. This session engages recent Duke Department of Medicine Fellowship graduates from different career settings to share their decision-making process from when they chose their initial career setting. We invite fellows who are in private practice, those who have left Duke for other academic institutions, individuals who have remained at Duke for their careers, and physicians who have taken different work pathways. To allow participation from former fellows across the United States, this session is virtual-only.
Transitioning to Your First Post-Fellowship Job. This highly interactive session also engages recent Duke Department of Medicine Fellowship graduates from different career settings. We invite recent graduates in private practice and individuals in academic practice inside and outside Duke. Recent graduates who work in clinical, research, and other areas share their lessons with fellows in the spring before graduation. To allow participation from former fellows across the United States, this session is virtual-only.
The third retreat, scheduled in May, is designed for graduating fellows across the Department of Medicine. This retreat is designed to prepare fellows for the transition to their first post-fellowship job. Topics will include evidence-based ways to prepare for career transitions, how to tune into your well-being during times of transition, and an opportunity to discuss the challenges of job transitions with recent Duke DOM fellowship graduates.
